The Wedsworth-Townsend Act

I love how the episode opens up in a quiet, still fire station, focusing on all the trucks and equipment. Then it moves to all the sleeping firemen. The first one we see is Johnny, who tosses restlessly. When the tones sound, he sits up and looks somewhat surprised, or startled. Wonder what he was dreaming about? I love how the first really action is all the guys in the boxers pulling up their turnout pants. Nice!

I thought the first rescue was exciting. Loved how they showed close ups of the hoses and how everything is connected, and the engineer turning all the knobs and things on the engine. The effects were very realistic!

Johnny was approached by the chief when they returned to the station, and encouraged to check into the new paramedic program. Johnny said he didn't want to be an ambulance attendant, and that he was in fact, happy being a rescue man. Their conversation was cut short as the tones sounded yet again.

Picture
The rescue went well, but the man was trapped in a power line and had been electrocuted. Johnny did CPR all the way to the hospital, and thought the man made it. This is when he walked into the exam room and saw that they had stopped working on the man.

Picture
Brackett looked at the scope and saw a straight line, despite his efforts to save the man. He was sweaty.

Picture
Dixie has her first line here - and she tells Dr. Brackett that perhaps the man could have been saved if he could have been defibrillated  at the scene. Brackett does not agree with the paramedic program, and thinks the paramedics are amateurs.

Johnny and Roy meet for the first time!

And so the training begins. I really enjoyed this part - being able to see what the training involved, and learning about the equipment. Here Dr. Brackett explains the defibrillator.

Picture
Brackett still is not convinced that the paramedic program is a good thing, but he appreciates the sincerity of the men in training, and thinks they're all great. He also mentions their dedication to the program without any incentive (monetary). Dixie professes her love to Brackett. They really made a great on-screen couple. Makes me kind of sad that that story line did not evolve.

On the first rescue with Station 51 as trained paramedics, Johnny and Roy swing by the hospital to pick up Dixie, because the bill hasn't passed yet allowing them to use their equipment in the field. There are a lot of close-up shots of the equipment again. Roy makes a lot of side-comments about how they are impotent in this situation. The final insult is when a cop at the scene asks them to help direct traffic since they aren't doing anything... lol.
Several fun scenes at the hospital - a man who can't believe he has an ulcer, a woman who has a toilet seat stuck to her butt, and a baby rabbit in a tuba. One serious scene where a 17 year old girl has her arm cut off... Johnny and Roy have to search for the missing limb and get it back to the hospital in time for it to be reattached. It was a success.

Picture
Another facet of the show not shown much - Roy with his wife, Joanne. I think it would have been nice to have more "off work" scenes like this, and show their personal sides. This was a birthday party for Johnny, thrown by Dixie. Interesting since they eluded to the fact that Johnny and Dixie had just recently met. Perhaps they'd become friends during his paramedic training. Johnny is all over a girl named Delores. He also makes a smart-ass comment to Brackett, which makes the doctor leave the party. Fun!

I love this episode. It was a great way to introduce to the public exactly what a paramedic was. One of my favorite scenes is the first meeting between Roy and Johnny. You can see the passion that Roy has for the program. And Johnny is not really sure about this program till Roy explains what is at stake.

I agree! It's funny how this is not an episode I revisit often, but when I really sit down and watch it, I'm amazed at how good it is.

I don't revisit this episode very often because (personally) I didn't enjoy the romantic aspect of the Brackett/McCall relationship. But this is, without doubt, one of the best episodes of the entire series. It was the pilot and set the tone for everything to come. I look at Randolph Mantooth and think how painfully young he looked.
